Building Green and Living Green is becoming more popular by consumers as they become more informed about the advantages of building and living a green lifestyle.

What can you, the consumer and homeowner, do to become part of the Greening of America?

Here are some green building and green living tips taken from the Sarasota County Website:

Green Building: What You Can Do

“Whether you are building new or simply want to make your current home green, let these tips work for you:

Green homes use natural resources by incorporating:
• Rapidly renewable materials such as bamboo, wheatgrass, cork and strawboard.
• Durable products made from recycled plastic jugs for decking, sills and siding.
Green homes typically save money on operating costs by using:
• Extra insulation.
• More efficient water heaters, lighting and appliances.
• Use of natural daylight.
Green homes and landscaping can impact climate change.
• Install native and adaptive plants in landscaped areas and minimized or no lawn to conserve water and reduce need for fertilizer
• Use porous paving in driveways and walkways to allow rainwater to seep into the ground.
• Use cisterns and rain gardens to reduce storm water runoff.
Green homes overall provide healthier environments through use of products that reduce toxins:
• Low- or no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, finishes and adhesives. Improved ventilation that adds indoor air quality benefits

What does all this mean? To me, it says that Green homes are healthier for families, more comfortable, and more affordable with the energy savings. They also save on our natural resources by reduced usage of utilities and water in addition to making use of recycled plastics and other repurposed products.”

What can YOU do in your present home environment to become a member of the Green Building and Living Consumer group? Start small if you need to but start now if you can.

Sarasota County is building Green Certified and LEED in all their new construction buildings. They see the value of Sarasota FL green homes and commercial buildings. The county website states:

“Sarasota County government is committed to environmental, cultural and economic sustainability. This means:

• Replenish the resources we use or consume.
• Ensuring our values guide us into the future.
• Investing in our community to ensure future prosperity.

To achieve the balance necessary for a sustainable community, our programs and services must be economically viable, environmentally sound and socially equitable.”
